Literature Text

A soft, cold wind tugged your [hair color] hair while you were waiting outside the courthouse of Gotham city. It had gotten dark very quickly and you closed your coat further around you. You didn’t like the lingering stares of the men that past you. Their hungry looks made you feel uneasy and send shivers down your spine.

You had been waiting for over half an hour now and you looked on your watch to see what time it was. When you had almost given up, the person you wanted to speak to walked out of the courthouse and made his way down the large steps. His brown hair framed his face and a mischievous smile curled his lips.

‘Doctor Crane, do you have a minute?’ You took out your recording device and shoved it under his nose. ‘My name is [Name] [Last Name]. I work for The Gotham Times and I have a few questions about the Arkham Asylum where you work.’

Crane laughed softly, looking into your eyes. ‘I would love to answer any questions you might have, miss [Last Name], but unfortunately I have other matters to attend to.’

‘Is it true that you use a special kind of drug to enhance people’s fears? And that you use the criminals you have admitted to the asylum to manufacture this drug?’

His expression changed after you had said those words and you knew you had hit him where it hurt. After months of research and sneaking around Gotham, you had finally found the big scoop you had been looking for, for years. Corruption wasn’t news anymore, neither were theft or murder, but a conspiracy with the criminally insane, that was something new.

‘I take that as a yes,’ you smiled, mentally padding yourself on the back.

‘You have no idea what you’ve gotten yourself into, miss [Last Name],’ Crane said, knocking the recording device out of your hand and breaking it by stepping on it. He looked around him nervously and opened his briefcase.

‘Hey!’ you cried out angrily. ‘That was mine.’

You lowered yourself down to the ground to get the pieces of the device. Maybe it could still be saved. When you turned your head to Crane again, looking up at him, he threw some kind of powder in your face. You stumbled backwards, falling to the ground.

‘What the…’ you started, feeling light in the head. Your vision was getting blurry and things that weren’t supposed to move, kept reforming themselves from big to small.

You let out a loud scream when someone – or something – lowered himself down to you. Maggots were crawling over his face as he spoke to you, but you didn’t hear the words. You were scared out of your mind and you crawled backwards, trying to get away from it. Scarecrow, scarecrow, scarecrow, was going through your mind as the man followed you. Glimpses of a fire appeared in front of your eyes and tears streamed over your face.

‘Get away from me!’

The man threw a hand of powder in your face, which made it hard for you to see anything. The images of a fire flashed before your eyes and you found yourself in your old bedroom again, flames licking your feet while they consumed the whole room. Screams of your sister echoed in your head. Her blackened body lay motionless on the bed next to you.

Strong hands closed around you and even though the face of the man was covered in maggots and other disgusting, little bugs you nested yourself against his chest and pulled him closer to you by his collar.

You felt your mind slip away into the darkness as the man took you into his arms and lifted you from the ground. You had no idea who he was and where Crane had gone and even though he looked terrifying, you were glad he held you in his arms. Nothing was more scary to you than that day, fifteen years ago, when you saw your sister getting burned alive. Nothing

SEVERAL HOURS LATER
When you opened your eyes again, you had no idea where you were. Your heart had found its steady beating again and the great, heavy feeling of overwhelming fear had also disappeared. You tried to move, but realized you were tied up to a chair. You tugged the ropes, but it was no use. They just cut into your wrists and you bit away the pain.

‘I told you,’ a voice echoed through the room you were in. ‘You have no idea what you’ve gotten yourself into.’

‘Doctor Crane?’ you cried out, looking around you. ‘They have gotten to you too?’

A laugh welled from his throat as he emerged from the shadows. ‘Not quite…’

‘I don’t understand,’ you muttered, looking at Crane as he walked up to you. ‘What is going on? Who brought me here?’

Crane smiled. ‘You don’t remember?’

‘I remember waiting outside the courthouse to talk to you. I had found out about something that you were doing in the asylum and I-I…’ you stopped your sentence as you realized why you had wanted to talk to him in the first place. It dawned on you that it was him. It had been him all along. ‘You…’ you mumbled. ‘It was you!’

A mischievous smile curled his lips, hearing you speak those words.

‘B-but how? Why?’

‘Why?’ Crane scoffed. ‘To create complete and utter chaos, of course! It’s time Gotham gets claimed by its rightful owners…'

‘You’re insane!’ you cried out, watching him walk through the room and laugh at your words. You rubbed your wrists together to try and slip your hands through the tight ropes.

‘I’m not the one admitted to an asylum, miss [Last Name]. You are,’ Crane smiled. ‘You see, after your little episode in front of the courthouse, the police agreed with me it was better for you to come to Arkham. This is your home now, miss [Last Name]. I suggest you get used to it.’

You had finally freed yourself from the ropes. Even though your wrists were covered with your own blood and you felt the stinging pain of the wounds constantly, you had to get out of here. Before it was too late.

You quickly got up from the chair and picked it off the floor. Crane had turned away from you and was walking towards the door. You hit him across the back of the head with the chair, causing the wood of the chair to break and Crane to fall to the ground, groaning. You jumped over his body and pulled the door open. You looked left and right and decided to go to the right.

You ran down the large hall, realizing you had no idea where to go. You had never been in the asylum before and when Crane had brought you in here, you had been unconscious. How the hell were you going to get out?

‘There’s nowhere to run, [Name]!’ you heard Crane scream after you. ‘Give it up. You’re mine now.’

‘Go to hell!’ you screamed back, running further through the asylum, finding nothing but empty rooms and dead ends.

Your heart started to beat faster when you saw a great door at the end of the hall, leading to an elevator. You ran as fast as you could towards the door, but once you reached it, it turned out to be locked. There was no other hallway or room for you to run into. You were trapped. You would always be trapped. You punched the glass in the large door, but it just hurt your hand. You started crying, scratching at the door as you lowered yourself down to the ground. There was no way out.

Crane turned the corner, locking his eyes on yours. You watched him as he walked up to you slowly. Surprisingly, even though his glasses were broken and his lip torn, he didn’t seem angry. He just walked up to you and lowered himself down to your level.

‘Let’s handle this as adults,’ Crane spoke to you, while you were still scratching at the door, crying. ‘Please?’

Crane pushed his broken glasses further up his nose and looked deep into your eyes. You actually thought he had the most amazing blue eyes, but you quickly shook that thought out of your head. He was a monster. You couldn’t start liking him. He was the enemy.

Crane wiped the blood from his lip while he leaned closer to you. ‘We don’t have to be uncivil, [Name]. We can be… friends.’

‘We’ll never be friends, Crane,’ you mumbled, wiping the tears from your face. ‘What do you want from me? You think you scare me, but you don’t. When I get out, I will tell everyone about this. So if you want to prevent me from getting all of this public, I suggest you kill me right now, ‘cause I’ll never stop fighting you. I will never stop trying to escape.’

Crane smiled, pushing himself off the floor. ‘I know and I’m looking forward to the day that you will, but for now, let’s get you to your room.’

‘Why don’t you just kill me!’ you cried out as he took you by the shoulders and pulled you from the ground.

‘I’m not a killer, [Name]. Opposite of what you might think. I promise you. No harm will come to you here.’

You followed him willingly, knowing there was no use in fighting him. He was stronger and faster than you, even though he hadn’t taken advantage of it yet. You would let him believe you were all his. You would do what he asked of you. Dance to his every tune, and when he would least expect it, you would try to escape. You would make him feel how you had felt. You would make him suffer…

SEVERAL MONTHS LATER
You were sitting opposite of Jonathan – after the first couple of weeks he had insisted you would call him that – and were waiting for him to say something. You were shifting nervously in your chair, not sure why he had called you here. In the past couple of months you had helped him perfect his drug, so he couldn’t be angry with you.

In the first several weeks at the asylum he had tested the drug on you, to see what kind of effect different doses had and if different compositions made any difference. But after you had almost died in his arms he had stopped experimenting on you. Sometimes you even thought you saw regret in his eyes every time he looked at you, but then within seconds the ice cold look would return and he would evade his eyes from you.

You had spent a lot of time together and your anger had faded away almost completely. Sometimes you even smiled at him genuinely and he would smile back. It had stopped feeling like a prison and more like a home. Jonathan didn’t have to order you to do things any more. At one point you had thought you were going crazy. You had read a lot about the Stockholm syndrome before Jonathan locked you away in the asylum and you thought you were losing your mind. But slowly you started to realize you had already liked him before he locked you away. You had always had a thing for bad guys and you were not afraid to throw yourself in dangerous situations.

But still the thought of escaping and picking up your old life lingered in your mind. This was not the place you were supposed to be. It was not the life you wanted to live. Even though your hate against Jonathan had faded and you didn't want to make him suffer anymore, you still hadn’t forgiven him. Someday, one way or another, you would escape.

‘He will be here soon,’ Jonathan finally spoke, looking at you.

‘He?’ you frowned, playing with the ruffles of your shirt.

‘The man I told you about. The man I work for. We work for,’ Jonathan corrected himself.

You nodded, looking down at your hands, not sure what to say. ‘What does that mean?’

‘It means all of this will be over soon,’ he sighed, looking somewhat disappointed. ‘You’ll no longer be mine…’

‘I don’t belong to anyone,’ you objected. ‘I’ve told you that a hundred times before.’

‘That’s not the way he’ll see it, [Name]. I…’

A knock on the door interrupted your conversation. One of the guards opened the door and excused himself.

‘There is a situation downstairs, doctor Crane,’ the man spoke. ‘You might want to come down.’

Jonathan nodded, pushing himself from his chair. ‘I’ll come right away. Just stay here, [Name],’ he ordered you. ‘I’ll be right back.’

You watched him as he followed the guard out of the door and close it behind him. A small smile covered his lips as he took a last glance at you. You looked down again and bit your lip. You didn’t understand why he made you feel so giddy inside every time he smiled at you. You knew you weren’t supposed to feel this way, but you did. You just did.

You pushed yourself from the chair and walked around in Jonathan’s office. You looked at some of the files he kept in the drawers, but nothing really spiked your attention. You knew the whole asylum was just a façade for some kind of secret plan to plunge Gotham into complete and utter chaos.

You took your seat in Jonathan’s chair and turned around in it. You opened one of the drawers in his desk and took out the notepad. He had scribbled several things down, but most of it you couldn’t read. On one of the pages you thought you could make out your name, but all the following pages were ripped out, so you would probably never know what Jonathan had written about you.

You put the notepad back where you had found it, opening the other drawer. You moved some pens around until your hand touched the barrow of a gun. Your heart started to beat faster as you took it out of its hiding place. Next to it were several keys. You swallowed hard, realizing this were the keys to the big door that would lead you to your freedom.

You slowly stood up from the chair, holding the gun and keys in your hand. You stared down at them, not sure what you should do. Just when you wanted to walk out of Jonathan’s office, you heard voices outside and the door was opened.

Jonathan made his way inside the room and closed the door behind him. He turned to you, a smile curling his lips. The smile quickly disappeared when he saw you standing behind his desk the gun and keys in your hand.

‘[Name]…’ he whispered, turning the lock on the door and walking towards you. ‘You don’t want to do this.’

You pointed the gun up at him, your hands shaking. You didn’t want to shoot him, but nothing would stop you from finally getting free.

‘I don’t, but I will if you don’t let me go.’

‘No,’ Jonathan started, walking closer to you and taking off his glasses. ‘You won’t.’

He placed his glasses on his desk and walked around it, even closer to you. You gestured him he should stop, pointing the gun in his direction.

‘Jonathan…’ you begged, tears stinging in your eyes. ‘Just let me go.’

‘I can’t…’ he swallowed hard, taking the gun from your hands and putting it back in his desk. He took you into his arms and tucked a strain of hair behind your ears. ‘I won’t.’

‘I-I…’ you started, not really sure what you should say or do.

‘Shush,’ Jonathan spoke softly, letting his finger stroke your lips. He moved his hands from your waist to your cheeks and leaned in for a kiss.

He pulled you closer to him and kissed you passionately. You dropped the keys on the floor and gave in to the kiss.

‘You are free,’ Jonathan panted after the longing kiss and let his forehead rest against yours, ‘but don’t ask me to let you go, because I can’t. I won’t.’

You nodded, smiling against his lips. ‘Your secret is safe with me, scarecrow.’
