On the run - Chapter 13


Your P.O.V.
‘[Name]!’ Steve screamed into the earpiece. ‘Sam, please tell me you caught her.’

You opened your eyes again, feeling the wind caress your skin. You looked up to Sam, who was holding you into his arms, flying you back to the ground.

‘I did. She’s fine.’

‘Thank God…’ Steve sighed. ‘[Name], don’t ever scare me like that again. Sam, I’m gonna need a lift.’

Sam put you on the ground, letting go of you when he had made sure you were okay.

‘Go,’ you nodded. ‘I’ll be fine.’

Sam didn’t let you tell him twice and took off again, leaving you to figure out what you should do next.

‘Maria, how much time do we have?’

‘Under five minutes. Captain, you’ll need to be fast.’

‘Got it,’ Steve replied.

You started running back into S.H.I.E.L.D. headquarters, not aware that Steve was thrown off the helicarrier, almost falling to his death, while Sam lost his wings and ended up grounded. You ran up the stairs where the alarm was echoing through the staircase. You quickly hid behind one of the walls as you heard voices.

You opened the door slightly and looked inside. You saw Rumlow taking down several S.H.I.E.L.D. agents, killing them all. You reached for the knifes in your boots and turned them around in your hands, waiting for him to turn his back on you. When he was called in and was headed right for the door you were hiding behind, you quickly jumped down several stairs, hiding around the corner so that he couldn’t see you.

His footsteps echoed through the staircase as he made his way up. You followed him at a distance, hoping he wouldn’t make you until he was out of the staircase. You signaled into the camera that you were going after him. You knew Maria was watching and would keep an eye out for you.

‘Falcon, Rumlow is headed for the Counsil,’ Maria told Sam. ‘[Name] is going after him, but she might use your help.’

‘I’m on it,’ Sam replied. ‘[Name], don’t engage until I get there.’

You smiled, turning the knifes around in your hands again, still hearing the echo of Rumlow’s footsteps. ‘I can’t promise anything.’

Rumlow got out of the staircase at the 41th floor. You rushed up to the door and slowly opened it, making sure he didn’t see you, but when there was no sign of Rumlow, you ran into the room, wondering where he had gone.

The minute you stepped into the room, Rumlow kicked you in the stomach, slamming you against the wall. His gun was pointed at your head, but you were fast enough to duck as he fired for the first time. The bullet nested in the piece of the wall where your head had just been. You stormed at him, lashing out with your knifes and kicking the gun from his hands. You cut him several times on his arms, but he didn’t seem to care, he just laughed at you.

‘A few cuts won’t stop me,’ he smiled.

‘No,’ you agreed, staring at him intensely, ‘but he might…’

Sam punched Rumlow in the face. He caught him by the head and slammed his knee into his stomach. In responds Rumlow budded his head against Sam’s and pushed him on the floor.

‘This is going to hurt,’ Rumlow said, looking at the both of you and unzipping his bulletproof vest.

He lashed out to you first, hitting you in the jaw and kicking you in the stomach. You stumbled backwards, dropping one of your knifes.

‘There are no prisoners with HYDRA. Just order, and order only come through pain. Are you ready for yours?’

Before he could hit you again, Sam jumped him from behind, pulling him to the floor. He was quickly on his feet however, his fist ready to punch a hole through Sam’s skull. You got your knife from the floor, turning it around in your hand.

‘One minute…’ Maria’s voice echoed through your head.

Without thinking about it you threw the knife at Rumlow, hitting him in the shoulder. In the distraction you had created Sam was able to hit Rumlow across the face hard, sending blood drops flying through the room. Rumlow was stronger than you had thought however, knocking Sam back and pulling the knife from his shoulder with a steel face.

‘You’re going to regret doing that…’ he hissed, walking up to you slowly, ducking as you threw another knife at his head. You avoided his first punch by running underneath his arm, but as if he had anticipated that, he caught you by the hair and stabbed your knife right under your collarbone. He twisted it and smiled. You let out a tiny scream as he tossed you to the floor and kicked you in the side repeatedly, causing the stitches to tear again.

You bite away your tears and watched as he turned away from you and walked back over to Sam, who had luckily pushed himself off the floor. You tried to do the same, but you were too weak to even lift your head.

‘Charlie lock,’ it suddenly echoed in your ear.

‘Okay, Cap, get out of there.’

‘Fire now…’ Steve told Maria.

‘B-but, Steve…’ you started. ‘You’re still…’

‘Do it, agent Hill.’

‘Maria, no…’ you begged.

‘Do it now!’

Before you could say anything else, you could hear the shots being fired outside. You pushed yourself up a bit, keeping an eye on Sam, who knocked Rumlow back a few steps. They were still fighting as parts of the helicarriers exploded.

Sam tried to hit Rumlow again, but instead hit his hand and was tossed over the desks standing in the room.

‘Sam…’ you mumbled, looking at the burning hellicarier that was heading towards the building. ‘I think it’s time to go!’

Sam pushed himself off the ground and looked outside the window, seeing the helicarrier coming your way. ‘Oh, shit…’ he mumbled, running towards you. ‘Come on!’ Sam cried out, pulling you up. He put his arm around you and dragged you with him as you ran next to him as fast as you could.

‘Please tell me you got that chopper in the air!’ Sam screamed into his earpiece, running towards the windows to the other side of the room.

‘Where are you?’ you could hear Natasha’s voice in your ear.

A large piece of the roof fell down behind you, knocking Sam to the ground. You quickly pulled him up his feet as you yelled at Natasha were you were.

‘We’re on it!’ Natasha told you. ‘Just stay where you are.’

Sam and you looked at each other, feeling the ground underneath you shake. ‘Not an option!’ you both screamed, jumping over pieces of the roof and pushing yourselves through the window, shattering the glass.

For the second time today, you were both falling from the sky, until Fury pulled the chopper sideways, allowing you to fall through the doors. You were only barely able to hang on as Sam caught your arm and held onto the chopper himself. You were dangling above the ground, until Sam and Natasha pulled you in.

‘Where’s Steve?’ you asked with ragged breaths, trying to stop the bleeding in your shoulder. ‘Maria, did he make it out of the helicarrier?’

It was silent for several seconds, until Maria sighed. ‘No… He’s still in there.’

You leaned outside the chopper, looking at the helicarrier that had just scrapped S.H.I.E.L.D. headquarters. Tears were stinging in your eyes as you saw it falling apart. You bite your lip, until you could feel the taste of your own blood. You swallowed hard seeing the helicarriers going down. Sam closed his hands around your shoulders and pulled you away from the opening.

‘There’s nothing we can do…’ he whispered to you. ‘He’s Captain America. I’m sure he’s fine.’

You nodded, hoping – praying – Sam was right. You didn’t know what you would do if Steve died. He promised he would never let anything happen to you, but he never said anything about himself. You shook that thought from your mind. Steve couldn’t die. He just couldn’t. You loved him and you didn’t care if he loved you back, as long as he was still alive. That was the only thing that mattered.
