On the run - Chapter 7


Your P.O.V.
After you had finished breakfast, you and Steve had told Sam everything that had happened and were now discussing what you should do.

‘So, let me get this straight,’ Sam started, looking from Steve to you, and back. ‘S.H.I.E.L.D. has been infiltrated by HYDRA, which was supposed to be gone for over 70 years. This doctor Zola wrote an algorithm to use Project Insight for some evil plan HYDRA has been cooking on for the last couple of decades, and you are the only two that are trying to stop it, or even know about it?’

Both you and Steve nodded. ‘The algorithm must change something within the program that is already installed in the Helicarriers,' you mumbled, 'but I just can’t figure out what…’

‘Fury said Project Insight was going to be used to neutralize terrorist threats before they even happen, but what good would that do for HYDRA…’ Steve continued.

You were all quiet for several minutes, until Sam started talking again. ‘What about the HYDRA agents within S.H.I.E.L.D.. Any idea who might have been betraying you all this time?’

Both you and Steve shook your head. ‘But they must have someone very high up. There are not a lot of people that can launch a domestic missile strike,’ you said, turning your head at Steve. ‘Come to think of it, only one actually...’

‘Pierce…’ Steve nodded and sighed. ‘I knew something was off about him from the moment I met him, but he’s not working alone. Zola’s algorithm was on board of that ship. If it is so important for HYDRA, Pierce wouldn’t have left it unguarded.’

‘Jasper Sitwell...’ you mumbled. ‘He was on board of the ship. He told me about how you saved him from the pirates. You think he is a HYDRA agent?’

‘There’s only one way to find out…’ Steve said seriously, looking from you to Sam. ‘Let’s ask him.’

‘Yeah, only one problem, Captain… We’re the most wanted people in the world right now. How are we going to capture a S.H.I.E.L.D. officer in broad daylight without being noticed? We’re not exactly low profile anymore.’

‘The answer is, you don’t,’ Sam replied, getting a file from one of the drawers and throwing it on the table.

Both you and Steve looked at the file, which had a picture of Sam and another soldier on the front side.

‘What’s this?’ Steve frowned, looking from Sam to the file, picking it off the table.

‘Call it a résumé,’ Sam started, while you walked over to Steve and looked at the file together. ‘As I said before, I was a Pararescue. We were called upon for rescue missions in small spaces or with a limited amount of time.’

‘Wait I remember this,’ you said, taking a closer look at the photo. ‘The Khalid Khandil mission. They couldn’t bring in the choppers because of the RPG’s,’  you continued, while Sam nodded at your words. ‘What did you use then, a stealth chute?’

‘No, these…’ Sam picked up the file that was still on the table and handed it to Steve.

‘I thought you said you were a pilot,’ Steve smiled, looking up at Sam.

Sam shook his head, smiling back at Steve. ‘I never said I was a pilot.’

You leaned against Steve, looking at the file. ‘No way,’ you mumbled, going through he file. ‘You were part of project Falcon? I thought they shut that down, after… after one of the soldiers died.’

‘They did…’ Sam said, swallowing hard. ‘His name was Riley. He was my partner. His suit malfunctioned and we were all pulled off the project. But I know they never destroyed the suits.’

‘I can’t ask you to do this, Sam. You got out for a good reason.’

‘Dude, Captain America needs my help. There’s no better reason to get back in. Besides, by the looks of it, you could really use some help. No offense, [Name].’

‘None taken.’

Steve nodded. ‘Alright. Where can we get our hands on one of these things?’

‘The last one is at Fort Meade. Behind tree guarded gates and a 12-inch steel wall.’

Steve looked from Sam to you, not saying a word, but he didn’t have to say anything for you to know what he was asking. You nodded, both turning your gaze back to Sam.

‘Leave that to me,’ you smiled. ‘Do you have a phone?’

‘Yeah, right by the couch,’ Sam pointed in the direction of the living room, ‘but I don’t understand. How are we going to get the suit?’

Steve put his arm around Sam and led him into the bedroom. ‘Just get your things, Sam. It’s better not to ask.’

You walked over to the phone next to the couch. You turned the phone around, looking if any bugs had been planted on the phone. There were none. Luckily for you HYDRA wasn’t the NSA. You dialed a number, hoping you had remembered it correctly and waited for the person on the other end of the line to pick up.

‘Who is this?’ the person on the other line asked after several tones.

‘Zach… I need another favor…’
