Literature Text

Night had fallen over the mighty land of Asgard. It was more quiet than normal as you were walking through the halls of the grant palace. It had been several weeks since the dark elves had attacked Asgard and killed the queen, but the land was still in mourning. Thor had denied the thrown, so Odin was still king, though growing old and weak. Of the Asgardian warriors you were the one tasked with protecting the king, though he would not hear of it.

You knocked on the door of the king’s chambers before entering. The whole room still breathed the energy of the queen and you understood why the king spend most of his time here. You had always had a good bond with Frigga, as well as Thor and Loki, when he was younger. All had left you. Though the other Asgardian warriors were also your friends, you couldn’t help but feel the emptiness that was growing inside of you.

‘My king…’ you spoke firmly, while you kneeled down to one knee.

‘Lady [Name], please stand up. There is no need for such formality.’

‘As you wish,’ you nodded, pushing yourself from the floor and walking over to Odin, who was standing on the balcony, overlooking whole of Asgard.

‘Magnificent, is it not?’ Odin spoke, resting his hands on the thick, stone railing. ‘Asgard… land of the Gods.’

‘Is it, truly?’ you scoffed. ‘We pretend to be better than all the other realms, but are we? We fight the same battles, argue about the same meaningless things… We bleed the same color. Can we truly call ourselves Gods?’

Odin laughed. ‘You sound like Thor.’

‘And you sound like Loki…’ you frowned at your king suspiciously.

‘Thor said he died with honor.’

‘Thor always saw the good in his brother, even though it was no longer there…’ you turned away from Odin and gazed over Asgard. ‘I loved Loki once, but even I know he was never going to be the same.’

‘Did you ever tell him?’

You shook your head. ‘I thought he knew,’ you smiled sadly. ‘But when I looked into his eyes when I first saw him again I realized…’

‘He never knew…’ the king continued your sentence.

You nodded, quickly wiping the tears from your face. You turned around to Odin again. He was staring at the ground, frowning, seemingly thinking of something. When he looked up to you again, you thought you saw something glimmer in his eye.

Your heart started to beat faster and faster in your chest. You knew that look. ‘Tell me, my king…’ you spoke, looking at him. ‘Did you ever love me?’

Odin frowned again, his eye shifting over your face, a glimmer of green appearing in the corner.

You gasped. ‘You are not Odin… You are Loki.’

Before he could stop you, you had already started running. If Loki was pretending to be king, then… then Odin was dead and whole of Asgard would be lost if you didn’t stop him. You would have to outsmart him, but how? You looked over your shoulder, seeing Odin following you, slowly transforming back into Loki. A grin curled his lips.

You ran as fast as you could, but it wasn’t fast enough. Loki grabbed you from behind and lay his hand over your mouth before you could scream. You tried to escape from his grasp, but he had always been stronger than you in the past and even more so now.

‘Shh, [Name]. There is no need to run. Why do you always have to be so… loyal?’

‘You will not get away with this, Loki,’ you hissed, when he had finally let go of you. He had tied you to a chair using his magic. All the doors in the king’s chambers had been shut, meaning you could scream all you wanted, but no one would hear.  ‘They will find out and punish you for your crimes.’

‘Hmm,’ Loki smiled, looking at you intensely. ‘I think not. You see, I have and will always be smarter than you.’

‘No, Loki. You are a coward and a fool…’ you scoffed. ‘You could have had so much, but you decided to throw it all away for… for what exactly? Power, glory? I do not understand…’

Loki snorted. ‘I could have had you, you mean.’

You evaded your gaze and bite your lip. He pulled your face back to his, squeezing your jaw hard. He let his gaze go over your face, trying to find something in your eyes, but he didn’t seem to be able to find it. He let go of your chin and licked his lips, breaking eye contact.

‘And I did not give this up,’ he stretched his arms, looking around him. ‘It was taken from me. I do not seek power or glory. Such things are meaningless.’

‘Then what do you seek, Loki. Help me understand.’

Loki grinned. ‘Vengeance.’

You frowned, not understanding. ‘Upon whom? I can only hope you did not kill Odin, but if you did…’ you swallowed hard. ‘If you have… then who is there left to blame?’

Loki looked at you intensely, not saying a word.

‘These people you are ruling have nothing to do with what was done to you. Even you must see that. What could you possibly hope to accomplish pretending to be Odin?’

‘I am here to claim what is rightfully mine!’ Loki cried out.

‘So you do seek power.’

‘No… They will learn to fear me, like I learned to fear my father. They will feel my wrath…’

‘You have lost your mind! If that is what you truly wanted, then why wait all those weeks! You were waiting for someone to stop you, Loki. You were waiting… for me.’

‘Your compassion blinds you, [Name]. You claim to know who I am and to no longer love me, but are you trying to fool me, or yourself?’

You clenched your jaw, feeling the tension between you. You could almost not control your anger. You had been friends once. You had even loved him… You didn’t understand how so much could have changed in so little time.

‘I am not trying to fool anyone. If you would just let me try to help you, I could…’

Loki snorted and started laughing. He released you from the magic bonds that were holding you and pushed you against the wall. His hands rested at your arms, pushing you further against the hard stone. You felt his hot breath on your skin, while your heart beat faster and faster in your chest. Loki was right. You weren't trying to fool him. You were trying to fool yourself. Even after all those years and everything Loki had done, you still loved him.

‘We could…’ you whispered.

Loki frowned, letting his eyes go over your face again. You didn’t know what he was thinking, but he let his grip on your loosen just enough for you to reverse the roles. You took a knife from your boots and slammed Loki against the wall, the knife pressed into his throat. Blood dripped down his neck, but he didn’t seem to care, he just grinned at you.

‘You were always more attractive when you were angry…’ he smiled.

‘You think this is some kind of game, Loki? Playing with the lives of others? You have taken a step on a path so dark, not even the brightest light can bring you back…’

‘And here I was, thinking you wanted to try…’

‘Enough!’ you yelled. ‘You give me no other choice than to kill you, Loki.’

You pushed the knife deeper into Loki’s skin, until he grabbed your arms and swallowed hard.

‘You do not have to do this. I…I did love you, you know…’

You laughed. ‘Then why did you never say anything?’

‘Why didn’t you?’

He slowly got the knife from your hands and threw it away. He folded his arms around you, pulling you closer to him. ‘No more games,’ he whispered in your ear before stroking a strain of hair out of your face. He let his hand rest at the back of your head and pulled your face closer to his. A hasty, but passionate kiss found your lips.

Loki grinned, looking into your astonished eyes. For a moment you didn’t know what to do or what to say, until you felt Loki’s hands move over your body, loosening the straps of your armor. You let your fingers slide through his hair and pressed a longing kiss on his lips.

You let him push you against the wall, while his hands found a way underneath your armor and the kiss intensified. He slowly led you to the bedroom and lay you on the bed, taking you in his arms again and pressing your naked body against his. You let out a shaking sigh, which only encouraged him to continue.

‘You were right…’ Loki whispered, while you had been lying next to each other in silence for several minutes after the sudden act of passion . ‘I was indeed waiting. I thought taking everything my father had worked for away from him and destroying it would make me feel better. Would fill the emptiness inside of me. But I realize now that nothing ever will.’

‘Now look who is fooling themselves…’ you snorted, pushing yourself from the bed and putting your clothes back on.

‘What do you mean?’ Loki frowned, watching you strap your armor tightly around you. He put a hand underneath his head and smiled cheekily at you all the while you slid your feet back into your boots.

‘It does make you feel better, just not in the way you hoped it would.’

‘Wait, where are you going?’ Loki asked as you were walking away from him. He also pushed himself from the bed and put on his pants. He followed you, while you were walking towards the door.

‘You know I cannot stay, Loki. You are king Odin now. I can never stay too long in your chambers.’

‘I am king, I can decide who comes and stays in my chambers…’

‘I am one of the kings warriors. I took an oath to protect and obey the king.’

‘Then I order you to stay!’ he cried out, taking you by the hand and pulling you to him.

You smiled sadly, pressing a kiss on Loki’s cheek. ‘You can still redeem yourself, Loki. Be the king Asgard needs. The king I know you want to be… But you have to let me go.’

‘What if I do not want to let you go?’

You wriggled your wrist from his grasp and felt your fingers slip through his hand. ‘You cannot have everything…’

‘You are just going to walk away and let me have the throne?’ he screamed after you, while you were walking towards the door again. ‘I cannot be the king you want me to be.’

You didn’t listen to him, instead you walked out of the king’s chambers thinking – no, hoping – you may have showed Loki the way off his dark path.

‘Where is your loyalty now, lady [Name]!’ he screamed again. ‘If you walk out of that door right now, you would be wise to leave Asgard, or I will…’

‘Or you will kill me?’ you scoffed, turning around again just before you turned around the corner. ‘After what just happened? I think not, Loki…’

‘You tricked me…’ Loki said, realizing you had beat him at his own game. Realizing he wanted to be the king Asgard needed… The king you wanted him to be. He narrowed his eyes, the corner of his mouth moved up into a grin slightly. He seemed more amused than angry. ‘You tricked me into loving you again. Into seeing the light…’

You smiled, biting your lip. In his eyes you could see the realization that he had finally found someone who could outsmart him. Who was his equal. Someone who he could love and try to be a better person for.

‘And here I was, thinking you liked playing games…’ you said before turning around the corner. ‘You see, love is just another game. Only you have not learned to play it yet...’
