Literature Text

The HYDRA agents that were holding you pushed you roughly inside a room, where Schmidt was standing near a large window. Steve was pushed in quickly after you and you were standing next to each other, looking at Schmidt, when he slowly turned around.

‘Arrogance may not be an uniquely American trade, but I must say, you do it better than anyone,’ Schmidt started, looking at the both of you. He walked away from the windows and took his place in front of you. ‘But there are limits to what even you can do, captain… or did doctor Erskine tell you otherwise?

‘He told me you were insane,’ Steve said calmly, looking at Schmidt with a steel face.

‘Ah,’ Schmidt responded, letting the silence linger between them. ‘He resented my genius and tried to deny me what was rightfully mine, but he gave you everything. So… what made you so special?’

Steve smiled. ‘Nothing, I’m just a kid from Brooklyn.’

You could see the amusement in Schmidt’s eyes turn into complete and utter hatred and he latched out to Steve. He punched him against the jaw first and didn’t stop hitting Steve, until Steve had dropped to the floor in agony.

You fought the men that were holding you back and tried to free yourself from their tight grasp. You hated Schmidt for hurting Steve and for everything else he had done, or was about to do.

Schmidt took in a deep breath, looking down at Steve, before turning his attention to you. ‘Is that why you brought her?’ he started, walking towards you and letting his hand caress the side of your face.

You pulled away as shivers went down your spine, but he caught your chin between his fingers and looked at you with the same amusement as before.

‘I think not, captain. Take her away!’ Schmidt ordered his men, letting go of your face roughly. ‘Whatever plan you had in mind, it will have to do without her,’ he smiled, watching Steve as the panic grew in his eyes.

‘No, wait!’ he cried out, looking at you as you were fighting the men that pulled you back.

You laughed, trying to get Schmidt’s attention. ‘You’re just scared!’ you yelled at him, just before the HYDRA agents lifted you from the ground and carried you out of the room.

You cursed softly, feeling their strong hands close around your arms. The Howling Commandos could be here any minute. If this plan was going to succeed, Steve needed to go after Schmidt, but with you gone – taken away to god knew where – you weren’t so sure that he would.

‘Let go of me!’ you cried out to the men that were holding you. ‘I’m perfectly capable of walking myself, thank you.’

They both didn’t say a word, but carried you further into the maze of hallways and doors. You had no idea where they were taking you.

‘He’s going to kill the Captain, isn’t he?’

‘Yes,’ one of them said. ‘Now shut up, before I make you.’

They reached the entrance of what looked like a block of cells and they slowly put you back on the ground. They gave you just enough time to reach one of Howard’s gadgets that were attached to our belt.

You held your breath, pulling the pin from a little bottle filled with gas. Instantly a cloud of blue gas, spread around you. The agents started couching, reaching for their throats. They dropped you on the floor as their faces turned purple. You quickly detached the little bottle from your belt and ran out of the blue cloud, which didn’t seem to end.

You took in a deep breath when you were finally safe. Your hands were still tied up behind your back, but you had always been very flexible and you were able to jump through your own arms. You quickly removed the ropes from your hands and started running back to the room where Steve probably still was.

Gun shots could be heard in the distance, but you weren’t sure if it were the colonel’s men or the Howling Commandos. You ran in the direction of the fighting, hoping Schmidt hadn’t killed Steve yet.

You ducked quickly when a shot of blue, glooming light came for your head. You took cover in one of the hallways and saw Schmidt running past you, holding a big HYDRA gun in his hands. His gaze stopped on you for a few seconds. You could see he wondered why you were still alive. He pointed his gun at you, but before he could fire, a large explosion caught his attention.

He shot down the first five men that emerged from the hole in the wall, but quickly turned around when he realized he couldn’t fight them all off. He ran away from you, towards the entrance of the flight deck.

You ran out of hiding watching him run further into the hallway.

‘Watch out!’ Steve yelled at you, throwing his shield after Schmidt as he walked through the doors towards the flight deck.

You ducked just in time, feeling a gush of wind go over your head.

‘Are you alright?’ Steve asked, rushing over to you. He looked he up and down and let his hands rest on your shoulders. ‘D-did they hurt you?’

‘I’m fine,’ you responded, smiling at him. ‘They shouldn’t have…’

Before you could finish your sentence, Steve pushed you away from him. One of the HYDRA agents with a flamethrower came walking towards you and you felt your heart beat violently in your chest. Not those again, you thought.

Steve hid inside a door opening on the left side, while you did the same on the right. If you would have to wait for gas tanks of the flamehtrower to be empty, Schmidt would long be gone. But how were you going to make your way through the fire? You looked at Steve, but he also didn’t seem to know what to do.

Suddenly gunshots echoed through the hallway and with a large blast, the tanks of the flamethrower exploded. You protected your face from the blast with your arms, but you could still smell your hair and skin burning.

You bit through the pain and pushed yourself out of hiding. Peggy was standing just a few feet away, holding a large gun in her hands. Steve and you nodded at her gratefully, before returning to your pursuit of Schmidt.

You ran towards the door, that had stayed open because Steve’s shield was caught in the middle. Steve pulled it out and you both made your way onto the flight deck. You could see Schmidt running towards a plane in the distance and you knew there was no way you could reach the plane in time. At least not together.

‘Go!’ you cried out to Steve. ‘You’re much faster than I am. I’ll find a way to catch up with you.’

‘But…’ Steve objected, looking from you to Schmidt.

‘Go!’ you yelled, pushing him away from you.

You ran in the other direction, looking over your shoulder to see if Steve had done what you had told him. You could see him running across the flight deck, knocking down agents with his shield. You smiled, thinking nothing could stop him. It never had. It never would.

‘Need a lift?’ a voice cried out in front of you.

You turned your gaze back to where you were running, seeing the colonel riding towards you with a large, old looking car.

‘We need to get to Steve!’ you yelled, hopping into the car when he colonel stopped right in front of you. ‘He won’t make it without our help.’

The colonel nodded, hitting the gas the second you had closed the car door. You climbed to the back of the car, leaving enough space for Steve to get in when you would reach him,

‘There!’ you cried out, pointing in the direction of the large plane that was making its way across the flight deck. Steve was running behind it as fast as he could, but it was not fast enough.

‘Hang on,’ the colonel told you, turning the steering wheel in the direction you had pointed.

You fell back into the car seat and decided it was probably best if you stayed there.

‘Get in!’ the colonel yelled at Steve, stopping abruptly when you had finally reached him.

Steve did as he was told and jumped into the car, without even opening the door. The colonel hit the gas and within seconds you were driving dangerously fast again.

‘We need to go faster!’ you screamed at the colonel, seeing the distance between the plane and the car grow. At the back of the base, ou could see that the large door, leading to the sky, was being opened. ‘We’ll never make it like this!’

The colonel leaned forward and pressed the red button underneath the steering wheel. ‘Let’s see what this does…’ he said.

As he pushed the button the car accelerated again, pressing you even further into the back seat. You were getting closer again however, and Steve readied himself to jump out of the car and onto the plane.

‘Keep it steady!’ Steve yelled at the colonel, as you were closing in on the plane and Steve climbed out of the car.

You looked at him for a few seconds, knowing this was the last time you would see him before he went into the ice. You swallowed hard. After this, everything would be different.

‘Steve, wait!’ you cried out, pushing yourself from the backseat. He turned around, looking at you worriedly, wondering if something was wrong. You grabbed his suit and pulled him to you, before pressing a longing kiss on his lips.

When the kiss was over, Steve looked at you, frowning, not understanding why you had kissed him. ‘But I thought…’

You smiled, shaking your head. ‘You’ll understand later. Now go, before it’s too late.’

He nodded, pulling you against him and stealing a kiss from your lips. He looked in your eyes for a few seconds, a smile curling his lips. ‘I’ll come back to you,’ he whispered. ‘I promise.’

‘I know…’ you sighed, knowing it would take him a long, long time to do so.

Steve let go of you slowly and climbed out of the car, making his way over the hood of the car. The propellers of the plane grazed his shield, but he didn’t stop. He crawled further and you felt your heart beat in your throat when he finally jumped onto the plane.

The colonel hit the brakes immediately, spinning the car around. You nearly fell over the edge of the mountain, but the car stopped just in time for you to make it out safely. You pushed yourself from the backseat, looking up at the sky where the plane with Steve on board was flying towards the all-white horizon.

A tear left the corner of your eyes. The future was in Steve’s hands now. The only thing you could hope for, was that it was the same future you had left behind. You quickly turned around to the colonel, watching him as he also peered out into the sky. You couldn’t go back to the same future. Your most important mission was still unfished. There was no time to waste.

‘I need those files,’ you said firmly, looking at the colonel as he nodded at you slowly.
