Rise of the Fallen - Part 6: Bucky x Reader x Steve

During WWII - Italy, inside the Hydra base during the escape, 1943

You pushed yourself from the wall, still wobbling a bit because of the lack of feeling in your legs. The man looked familiar, but you just couldn’t remember why.

‘It’s me, Steve…’

You frowned suspiciously as he lowered his gun completely and helped you stand up.

‘What happened to you?’ he asked worried, looking at all the bleeding cuts on your body.

‘I could ask you the same… I remember you very differently.’

Steve smiled. ‘And I remember you a lot more lady like.’

‘What can I say… War does crazy things to you.’

Steve nodded, clearly agreeing with you. ‘What are you doing here anyway?’

The memory of Bucky floated through your mind again. ‘Bucky!’ you cried out, pushing yourself from Steve’s arms and running – as fast that was possible in your condition – into the room Bucky was still laying, reciting his name and number. You could hear Steve’s footsteps right behind you.

‘Stupid straps!’ you said desperately as the locks still wouldn’t budge and the key was probably nowhere to be found.

Steve was standing beside you, looking at Bucky. ‘Bucky… oh my God,’ he whispered. With enormous strength he ripped the straps from the table, freeing Bucky. He pushed you out of the way, so that Bucky had some space.

‘Who is there?’ Bucky said distantly.

‘It’s me, it’s Steve… and [Name],’ Steve said, pulling Bucky from the table. ‘Come on.’

‘Steve?’ Bucky seemed confused as he was leaning onto him.

‘I thought you were dead,’ Steve said.

‘I thought you were smaller…’

‘Guys… This place is about to blow, we need to leave.’

Steve nodded, looking around him, while Bucky was still acting distantly. He leaned on the both of you as you made your way out. The feeling had returned in your legs, but it was still hard to support his weight.

‘What did he do to you?’ Bucky whispered in your ear. ‘You look like shit and you smell funny.’

His comment made you smile a little, knowing he wouldn’t have said that if he wasn’t drugged. ‘Don’t worry about. Let’s just get out of here.’

Bucky nodded, turning to Steve again. ‘And what happened to you…’

‘I joined the army.’

You made your way through the hallway, looking left and right to make sure there were no Hydra agents. When Bucky was returning to his normal self again and was able to walk on his own, you let go of him, following Steve who was walking in front.

When the first couple of bombs went off you had just made it onto the platform above the large assembly room. The whole building shook and you had trouble staying on your feet. Bucky and Steve were standing near the rail of the platform as more bombs went off. You could feel the heat of the fire on your skin. You wiped the sweat of your brow as Steve led you to the other side of the platform, climbing up the stairs.

‘We need to hurry,’ you said with ragged breaths. ‘The walls are not going to hold much longer and they have enough explosives in this building to wipe a whole town of the map.’

‘I thought you were a nurse in the hospital back home?’ Steve yelled, trying to get over the sounds of the explosions.

‘I was…’ you started. ‘But I couldn’t let you guys go to war on your own.’

‘You sound like Peggy,’ Steve laughed.

‘Who’s Peggy?’ Bucky frowned, while you had reached the second floor.

‘Captain America!’ a voice cried out.

You all focused your gaze on the man that was standing on the other side of the platform. The two sides were only connected by a small bridge. As you looked closer you realized it was Johan Schmidt, leader of Hydra.

‘How exciting!’ Schmidt smiled. ‘I’m a great fan of your films.’

Schmidt walked up on the bridge and Steve followed his example, gesturing you to stay behind. Bucky put an arm around your shoulder and pulled you closer. You felt the familiar warmth of his body against yours.

‘So…’ Schmidt’s voice echoed through the hall. ‘Doctor Erskine managed it after all.’

You could feel doctor Zola’s eyes locking on both Bucky and you. You knew he had been injecting the both of you with drugs Schmidt knew nothing about. You were starting to wonder if it had been the same drugs this doctor Erskine had used on Steve.

‘Not exactly an improvement,’ Schmidt continued, ‘but still… impressive.’

Steve punched Schmidt in the face with his shield, driving him back onto the other side of the platform. When Schmidt recovered he tried to lash out to Steve, but he was blocked by Steve’s shield. Steve pulled out a gun, but before he could use it Schmidt had already punched him again, causing the gun to fall of the bridge. Steve fell backwards, but before Schmidt could attack Steve kicked him back to his side of the platform. Doctor Zola reached out for a lever and pulled it, causing the bridge to break apart, disappearing into both sides of the platform.

Schmidt didn’t seem pleased as he looked angrily at all of you. ‘No matter what lies Erskine told you… you see I was his greatest success!’ He pulled a mask of his face revealing his red skull.

Bucky tensed up next to you, staring at Schmidt. ‘You don’t have one of those, do you?’ he asked Steve.

You didn’t know what was going on. As the fire beneath you heated up your skin, you tried to get your head around everything that had happened the last couple of weeks. Maybe doctor Zola had tried to recreate in Bucky and you what this doctor Erskine had done to Schmidt and Steve. You could only hope it didn’t work or that you would turn out like Steve. The sight of the red skull terrified you.

‘You are deluded, captain,’ Schmidt started. ‘You pretend to be a simple soldier, but in reality you are just afraid to admit that we have left humanity behind. Unlike you I embrace it proudly, without fear.’

‘Then how come you’re running?’ Steve yelled as doctor Zola and Schmidt stepped into an elevator, probably bringing them to safety.

A new set of explosions almost brought you to your knees. ‘We have to go now, Steve!’ you yelled.

He nodded, looking around him, to see if there was anything you could use to get to the other side. ‘We have to go up,’ he said, pointing to a door, further above you. You followed him up the stairs, pulling yourself up by the rail.

When you arrived at the top floor, there was no bridge to bring you across to the door. There was only a small ledger. You weren’t even sure if it was going to hold your weight, let alone the weight of three people.

‘Let’s go,’ Steve said. ‘One at a time. [Name], you go first, you’re the lightest.’

You nodded, climbing over the rail, ignoring the help he offered you. As if you had done it before, you quickly made your way over to the other side. The ledger creaked a little, but didn’t move much. You tried to ignore the heat of the fire beneath you and the ongoing explosions. You were just thinking that you weren’t going to die after all the shit you had just been through. You climbed back over the rail on the other side and gestured that Bucky or Steve should come.

‘If you go quickly it will hold!’ you yelled to them.

Steve nodded and helped Bucky onto the ledger. Right as Bucky made his way over to you, a large explosion caused the ledger to break on your side, leaving it hanging just a few inches from the platform. Your heart beat uncontrollably in your chest as you saw the panic in Bucky’s eyes.

‘Focus on me, Bucky!’ you screamed. ‘Just a few more steps!’

He locked his eyes on you, only a few times looking down to see where he put his feet. When another explosion caused the ledger to completely break off he ran the last bit and jumped onto the platform, nearly knocking you to the ground.

Steve looked at you as the ledger fell down into the fire. You could feel a tear running down your cheek.

‘There’s got to be a rope or something!’ Bucky yelled desperately to Steve.

‘No, just go! Get out of here.’

‘No, not without you!’

‘You have to jump!’ you yelled.

Steve looked at you suspiciously, but then apparently thought it was a good idea as he took a few steps back and started to run. You pushed Bucky out of the way as Steve jumped. You stuck out your arm as you were certain he was not going to make it. After what seemed like several minutes – but probably was just a few seconds – you felt a tug on your arm, which nearly pulled you over the rail. You felt Bucky’s arms around our waist, pulling you towards him. Together you pulled Steve up.

‘Thanks,’ Steve said with ragged breaths.

‘Don’t mention it,’ you brushed it off, rubbing your arm. ‘Now, let’s just get outside.’

When you were outside, the fight was still in progress. You heard gunshots all around you, which brought you back to that day more than a month ago when they had captured you.

‘Stay close to us, [Name],’ Steve said, looking around him. ‘I don’t want you to get hurt.’

‘Don’t worry about me, cap, I can handle myself.’

‘Even if that’s true, I can’t let you fight. You’re a woman.’

You frowned angrily, which made Bucky smile.

‘Stay behind that truck over there,’ Steve said, pointing at a burned out truck.

‘You got to be kidding me, right?’ you said, while he pushed you behind the truck. ‘Bucky?’

‘I’d rather have you save too,’ he said, taking your hands in his and stroking your hair behind your ears.

You pulled your hands away and turned around angrily.

‘Come on,’ Steve said to Bucky. ‘We’ll be back for you when it’s safe, [Name].’

‘Whatever…’

When they were gone you took in your surroundings and ran to the other side, taking cover behind a different truck. You picked up the first gun you could get your hands on. You were not going to let them tell you what you couldn’t or shouldn’t do. You made your way over to where the fight was still going and pointed your gun at every Hydra agent that came your way. You had never actually killed someone before, but the anger had built up inside of you and somehow you didn’t feel any regret or sorrow. The pain would come later.

You heard Steve yell commands to the soldiers around you and you saw Bucky running to the forest, gesturing all the other soldiers to follow. From the corner of your eyes you saw one of the Hydra agents walk up to Steve, his gun pointed at his head. Steve didn’t seem to notice and was shooting at different Hydra agents. Before he could turn around to shoot the agent behind him, the agent had already put his finger on the trigger. He wasn’t able to take the shot however, as you pulled your trigger before he did and his lifeless body fell to the ground. You quickly ran towards Steve who looked at you with a mixed look of astonishment and fear.

‘What the hell…’ he said. ‘I though I told you to stay behind the truck...'

‘You’re welcome, Steve,’ you smiled. ‘Let’s go, before more of those bastards start showing up.'
