Seeker of Truth - Chapter 1: The Battle of New York


You never thought aliens existed, until they came to earth.

You don’t remember much from the attack itself. You were working in one of the buildings in central New York. One of the buildings that are no longer there.

Music was humming in your ears from the pink headphones you had just bought the previous week. No one really knew what happened, until it was too late.

You remember the high pitched screams from the receptionist when all the windows started vibrating and eventually burst into a thousand little pieces. The ground shook as if there was an earthquake and everyone crawled under their desks.

You removed your headphones and heard the loud screams and cries echoing through the building. You stood there frozen. Your coworkers pulled you to the floor, when the ground started shaking again.

You looked at your friend, Josie, who was curled up next to you, crying. Tears were running down her face. You held her hand in yours and squeezed it.

‘We are going to be fine, Josie,’ you whispered. ‘Whatever is happening, Iron Man will solve it.’

You thought about Tony Stark, your aunt Pepper’s boyfriend. You had been to their house a couple of times, but he seemed to keep forgetting your name. But because Pepper was your aunt, he would give you nice quotes to put in your articles about him.

Josie looked at you and nodded. ‘I guess you are right, [Name].’

You looked out the broken windows and saw large aliens on jet ski like flying boards flying through the city. You couldn’t believe your eyes and thought you were dreaming.

There had been a lot of strange things going on lately. Things the government wouldn’t elaborate on, but you never thought you would live to see the day that flying aliens where hovering New York.

‘What are those?’ Eric asked, one of your other coworkers. ‘Are those aliens?’ He took out his phone and started making photo’s. ‘[Name], look! Isn’t that Iron Man?’

You followed Eric’s finger and saw Tony’s suit flying towards aliens and firing repeatedly into their flanks. Several aliens got heavily hit and started going down, while flames were eating their boards.

A weird humming noise echoed in your head. The sun got blocked by a huge object, while you felt like your head was about to burst.

A ball of fire went through the building, taking half the floor down. You saw how several coworkers fell into the cracks that formed. You heard Josie sobbing on the background, while she squeezed your hand until you didn’t feel it anymore.

The cracks spread through the building and you could see the terror in Eric’s eyes. You sighed and tried to think clearly. You weren’t ready to die. Not just yet.

‘We need to jump!’ you screamed and tried to stand up.

‘What? Are you crazy. We will die! We are on the 10th floor,’ Eric screamed back.

‘If we stay here we will die for sure. If we time it correctly we can jump on one of those boards.’

‘Did you forget about the evil looking aliens that are wheeling them? What do you suggest that we do with those?’

You didn’t think about that, you realized.

Another ball of fire went through the broken windows and hit the receptionist's desk. You got knocked back, your head hit the floor hard. You felt Josie’s hand slipping from yours.

‘No,’ you whispered.

You felt the floor disappear underneath you. The falling sensation that followed next send shivers down your spine. Black spots started blurring your vision, until everything went black and the humming noise stopped. You thought you had died.
